NEWPORT COUNTY STAR GIVES FOOTBALL MASTER CLASS TO BUS DRIVER
Newport Bus driver Wayne Munford was treated to a football master class by Newport County’s new midfield signing Tommy Doherty ahead of the club’s season opener against Kettering this weekend.
But neither could get the ball past the biggest defender Northern Ireland international Doherty is likely to meet this season – Newport Bus’ new X30 bus.
The Exiles star took some time out from training ahead of Saturday’s big season opener to see the new bus, which operates between Newport and Cardiff. Newport Bus is one of the club’s sponsors for the forthcoming campaign and staff at the city’s bus operator are getting right behind the team in its promotion push.
Tommy, whose previous clubs include QPR and Bristol City, said: “I’m glad I don’t have to face defenders that big every weekend! The new bus looks great and for us as a club it’s important to know that fans are able to get to see us play using public transport.”
Wayne Munford, 46, who lives near Maindee added: “It was fantastic getting to kick the ball around with Tommy. I used to play football in school as a defender, but I’m afraid to say that when it came to volleying the ball with Tommy my work boots let me down!”
Scott Pearson, Managing Director at Newport Transport, which owns Newport Bus, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Newport County for the forthcoming season. County enjoyed a fantastic campaign last season and I know that lots of our staff are big fans of the club and are hoping they can go one step better this year.”
