Discover Wales and Borders this Winter

18th JANUARY 2010

Rail passengers aged 55 or over have a big reason to smile in 2010, as Arriva Trains Wales has brought back the Club 55 promotion (until 19th March), enabling travel anywhere on its network for only £15 return.

Having introduced the promotion between September and December 2009, overwhelming passenger response has secured its return in 2010 and Arriva Trains Wales has now linked up with tourism and accommodation partners such as True Giants and St David's Hotel in Cardiff to pass on further offers and discounts to Club 55 users.

We've compiled a list of events and attractions worth exploring on the network, so why not discover something new in 2010:

1.    The sales at St David's shopping centre in Cardiff
2.    Visit Clough Williams-Ellis' spectacular Portmeirion Village (free until 1st March)
3.    Take the grandchildren to the Moscow State Circus at Venue Cymru
4.    Warm up with a visit to Penderyn Whiskey Distillery
5.    Plan your Summer holiday with ideas from the Boat and Caravan Show at NEC
6.    Walk away the winter blues on the Lord Crawshaw Memorial Walk in Llanwyrtyd Wells (6th February)

9.    Discover the beautiful beaches and trailways along the glorious Cambrian Coastline
10.    Join the survival of the fittest at Shrewsbury's Darwin Festival (12-14th February)

Vanessa Schotes, Head of Marketing at Arriva Trains Wales said "We were delighted to receive many requests from passengers to bring back the Club 55 offer in 2010. We hope that people continue to enjoy this special fare.

"Using the train is a wonderful and sustainable way to explore new parts of Wales and Border regions. This ticket is ideal for a trip to the new St Davids shopping centre in Cardiff or for visiting the many great events taking place across the network.

By working with partners such as True Giants and St Davids Hotel we're hoping to pass on further offers to our Club 55 users."

Dewi Davies, Regional Strategy Director, Tourism Partnership North Wales, said, "Arriva Trains Wales' support for True Giants through its already successful Club 55 initiative is a great way to encourage more visitors to travel by train and to enjoy the culture and heritage of North Wales in a sustainable fashion. The support of the attractions is also key and has ensured we have been able to put together some great deals which should benefit the region's tourism as a whole over the coming months.

Linda Crunkhorn, Financial and Contracts Manager of Mid Wales Tourism said "Mid Wales Tourism is very supportive of any initiative, including the Club 55 fare, that encourages the use of rail travel, including our own regional Cambrian Coast Line, by both visitors and local people alike"

Adele Tibbott, Sales Director at St Davids Hotel, Cardiff Bay said "We are delighted to be involved in the newly launched Club 55 promotion, working in partnership by offering preferential rates to the over 55's encouraging them to travel with Arriva Trains Wales to Cardiff, a great destination with a lot of attractions, complimenting their visit to South Wales by staying at 5*The St David's Hotel & Spa.
