Bus service accepting euros for fares

24th JULY 2009

A popular bus service claims to have become the first in Wales to accept the euro as payment.

The Preseli Bus, formerly the Walkers’ Bus, decided to adopt the move because of how close the service is to ferry ports.

Caroline Wilson, co-ordinator for the organisation, said: “As we’re so near to Ireland and the ferry, we thought it was a good idea as some tourists might be put off visiting the hills as they have no money in pounds sterling.

“In the past we’ve had people coming from other European countries such as Germany and France and we wanted to make them feel even more welcome by offering them the chance to pay with euro.”

The bus started accepting the currency as payment on Tuesday.

She said: “It’s a great idea and would definitely be good in popular tourist destinations such as Cardiff.

“We decided to charge the same in pounds and euros – so an adult return ticket costs both £4.50 and four and a half euros.

“It makes life easier that way, for the passengers and the drivers, and if the visitors need change they’ll get it in pounds sterling.

“We’re really pleased with our new service. Lots of tourists get caught out without the correct currency, but we’re eliminating this problem.”

Rob Lewis, Pembrokeshire council’s cabinet member for tourism, said “Anything which makes life easier for our visitors and attract tourists to our county is to be welcomed.”
