Community & Demand Responsive Transport
Community Transport (CT) provides access to a wide range of services and opportunities for those unable to access traditional public transport due to age, location, disability or other factors. CT plugs the gaps in the public transport network, providing a flexible solution where conventional public transport is not viable or the market has failed. CT schemes come in all shapes and sizes, but all CT services are run on a not-for-profit basis. Schemes may be operated by informal community groups, charities, not-for-profit companies, social enterprises and even public bodies such as Local Authorities.
Poor access to services and opportunities is a key issue for many communities across Wales, with a particular impact on elderly and disabled people and those living in deeper rural areas. Many CT services use specialist vehicles and provide additional assistance for wheelchair users and people with other mobility difficulties. Users of CT are usually asked to contribute towards the cost of their journeys.
The Community Transport Association (CTA) is a rapidly growing charity providing leadership, learning and enterprise support to the CT sector across the UK. CTA Wales is funded by the Welsh Government as the voice of voluntary and community transport in Wales.
